Weekly Abysmal Video 5-10-10

It’s time to pay homage to one of my absolute favorite drummers of all time – indeed one of the 10 Most Truly Abysmal Drummers, Jeff Burrows.  Formerly of the Tea Party, he now lays down the percussive heartbeat for Canada’s Crash Karma.  The band also features the distinctive vocals of former I Mother Earth frontman Edwin.   This is another WAV that’s not actually a video because I can’t find one.

Hell, you don’t need one.

Just enjoy this wonderful tune and show the guys some love by buying their new debut CD.

And will someone please explain to me why this song isn’t all over the airwaves in the US?  Enjoy Abysmally…

I almost can’t believe I’m posting this one.   If you’re easily offended, you don’t want to watch it.  But if you like Monty Python-style irreverence, have a laugh and a jam with this gem from the late 80’s.   Zodiac Mindwarp is the alter ego of British graphic artist Mark Manning, and the whole concept was intended as a parody of the “rock n roll lifestyle” so ridiculously exploited in the 80’s heyday of hair bands.

If you got the joke, it was great…and there was some pretty cool music providing the soundtrack for the craziness.  If you didn’t get the joke (and most critics DIDN’T), it was nothing more than offensive drivel that led to a review I saw in the Baton Rouge Advocate’s “Fun” section back in 1988 that said “…it’s enough to make me swear off recorded music.”

Special thanks to Dr. Paulo for this suggestion.  Man, this is just too damn over-the-top hilarious!

And on that note, enjoy Abysmally…

Gotta give some love to the Badlees for this week’s WAV. One of the very best rock bands you’ll ever hear, their CD’s play like movies about life. You’ll find it all…happiness, sadness, melancholy, joy, the full gamut is there wrapped up in wonderful songs. I saw them this past Saturday night at Front Street Station in Northumberland, PA and it’s my favorite show of theirs that I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to attend. These guys just smoke live…an emotional machine with songs you can get lost in.

Since Badlees videos are a tad hard to come by, this week’s WAV isn’t a video but rather a track off their latest CD “Love is Rain.” Enjoy Abysmally…and give the Badlees some love by stopping by www.badlees.net and getting your own copy.

Back in 1983, a Louisiana band with a well-deserved excellent reputation released their debut album on Atlantic Records. At the time, and for a few years afterward, it was the top-selling debut in Atlantic Records’ history.

That band was Zebra, and this week’s WAV is a song and video off that debut album…and it still sounds incredible 27 (gulp) years later. Oddly enough, their name doesn’t come up nearly enough in discussions about 80’s rock…and their debut is timeless and one of the very best albums of the 80’s. No gimmicks…just great music.

Weekly Abysmal Video 3-17-10 St. Patrick’s Edition

This week’s WAV comes from (DUH!) Northern Ireland. I mean, it’s St Patrick’s Day, I’m Irish…it would just be a crime for it to be any other way! lol

It’s one of my favorite unsung Irish bands who debuted back in the 90’s alternative boom with the “Troublegum” CD and produced some really cool stuff that rocks with intelligence. Really one of the more intelligent bands you’ll ever find anywhere.

Here’s their video for “Isolation.” Enjoy Abysmally…and please, for the love of the leprechaun, don’t drink the green beer tonight. Have a Guinness.

Weekly Abysmal Video 3/8/10

This week’s WAV is from a very short-lived California band from the early 2000’s (man that number just looks improbable) that never took that proverbial “next step” despite very close ties to the band Incubus. Truth is, I thought their CD “Dirty Sexy Knights in Paris” was okay but not great; however, one track from that CD is very close to challenging for a spot amongst the 10 Most Truly Abysmal Songs. I hope you dig it as much as I do.

Click on the picture below to link to the video for “The Energy” by Audiovent.   I’ll apologize ahead of time for the fact that there’s a 30-second commercial before you watch the video.  YouTube’s doing it, too.  Damn commercialism…

We are the energy.
Enjoy Abysmally…

Yes, that was intentional. lol

Weekly Abysmal Video (WAV) – 3/3/10

I’m constantly surprised by the number of people who remember this song…especially since it came out back in my radio days in good ol’ Baton Rouge, LA.   I totally missed it at the time, but it just seems like a perfect choice for a WAV.

RIP Jim Ellison…the terrific singer/guitarist for this band, Material Issue.  And whatta great chorus line:  “No one can save us from Kim the waitress.”

Cheers to you, and by all means…enjoy Abysmally:)

LIVE Review: Cage the Elephant 2/26/10 Recher Theatre in Towson, MD

Okay, you already know I’m a CTE homer and their live show this past Friday night at the Recher Theatre sealed the deal.

The evening started off great because I was there with my friends The DMC, Ryan, Kate, Mike and Brynn and they’re good company.   As soon as I saw the inside of the theatre, I was stoked.  Just a big ballroom with no seats and a stage at one end.   This is how I wanted to experience this band.

Before I forget, I’ve got to give props to Morning Teleportation and As Tall As Lions for both being excellent bands opening the show for CTE.  Please give props by clicking their names in the last sentence and discover their music for yourself.  There’s no surprise like knowing nothing about the two opening bands you’re going to see, and then thoroughly enjoying them both:)

When CTE took the stage, they took a nod from the Ramones and pretty much went from song to song.  As Joe Perry would say, they “let the music do the talking”…except for an amusing musing from frontman Matt Shultz about trading someone a Mark McGuire baseball card for a bunch of Cal Ripken cards some time back.   The Mark McGuire card “ain’t worth nothin’ anymore,” he laughed.

“Tiny Little Robots,” “Back Stabbin’ Betty,” “Ain’t No Rest For the Wicked”…they played most, but not all, of their debut CD and some new ones as well.  It was really cool to just enjoy the new songs in the mix without introduction, and I have to say they all sat comfortably with their current selection of songs.   It would have been reeeeally nice to hear “Judas” live, though:)

I was hoping for a fun show from a truly dynamite up-and-coming band, but it was way more than that.  What I saw was what happens when good young musicians are influenced by Dylan, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Ramones and all the formative classics from rock to garage to punk.   They pick up on the GOOD habits, create their own blend and ultimately become a true band.   Cage the Elephant is, to me, ushering in a whole new generation of rock n roll.     Forget emo, screamo or whatever the flavor of the month is.   CTE is one of those truly special bands that is putting their own honest, youthful spin on the spirit of good old school rock n roll in creation of music that will sound just as great 10 years from now.

Matt Schultz is undoubtedly the center of attention on stage as the manic, spastic (I mean that as a compliment) never-stop-moving front man.  The younger generation needs its own Angus Young…someone with style who is truly relentless in letting the music take over onstage.   Matt Schultz is all that as a front man (‘cept he’s prettier…sorry Angus).    He’ll get even better with time, as he does tend to run out of breath singing at times.  Hell, I would, too, going crazy like that.   Don’t change a thing, Matt.

And the band…ladies and gentlemen, this is a true band.  Jared Champion (drums) and Daniel Tichenor (bass) lay down a tight and relentless groove that makes it easy to get lost in the songs.   Never overplaying but always slipping in some tasty licks when you care to focus in on what they’re individually playing.   Ya gotta have groove, baby, and these two are as fine of a rhythm section that any band could hope for as they combine both power and finesse.

And then there are the guitars…man, those guitars.   Brad Schultz and Lincoln Parish have ridiculous chemistry that’s all over their CD and translates quite well to the stage.  Do yourself a favor and slap on the ol’ headphones sometime and listen to the guitar work  on their CD.  Textures, rhythm, crunch, melodies and savvy that belie their young ages.    It was a joy to watch these guys live, as they both are obviously in love with the myriad sounds they can make with their guitars and ultimately the music they create.   If you haven’t seen this band live, it’s well worth your time to check them out.

It’s really sick that a band this young is this good.   One of my top 10 favorite new albums and bands of the past 25 years without a doubt.  And thank you Jared and Mr. Bill Champion for your kindness.   The CTE show was quite the loud, joyous, life-affirming experience I hoped it would be.   I will never ever forget this.

And as soon as I can successfully grab some still concert shots off my crappy camera, I’ll post some pics:)

Fierce Heart – Fierce Heart

1984 Mirage/Atlantic

Man does this one bring back some memories from high school. I remember living for weekend trips into Baton Rouge with my bud Paul Payne in relentless pursuit of stellar new jam…usually at the now defunct superstore New Generation.  I picked this one up for $4.99 back in the day and recently stumbled upon it used online.   I remember knowing virtually nothing about this band and being thoroughly floored by the quality of the hooks.

Remember folks, this was the 1980’s when buying independent music was a true crap shoot. Production on independent albums was typically poorly mixed and wholly lacking in power. When you found an independent record that sounded good, even middling songs tended to rock.
I gave these guys the benefit of the doubt (despite the ridiculous cover art) since they were on a subsidiary label of major players Atlantic.   And they doth not disappoint.

First of all, this disc has that quintessential 80’s classic FM radio mix that fills up the room, so the sounds are BIG.  This is a band obviously in love with the big guitar sounds they’re creating and that total conviction and enthusiasm wins the day with heroic riff after heroic riff.
And it’s a good thing because upon rediscovering this gem I also discovered its Achilles heel…some of the most naff lyrics you’ll ever read.

To wit:
“I want the lion’s share…so you’d better beware”
“Get ready for the hurricane, the storm is headed right your way.”
“We’re taken very seriously, you’d better watch your step.”
“We’re like a wolfpack, the toughest around, got the foxiest girls, find them in town.”
“We’re the heroes and where we go, you’d better step aside”

Yep.    And that’s just a mere smattering of the smorgasboard of intelligencia to be found.

But I digress…truth is, bassist/vocalist Larry Elkins could be singing nursery rhymes for all I care, his husky voice having just enough honest scratch to convey sincerity.   This is the album I always wished Foreigner would make, as they always flirted with being a true hard rock band before they wanted to know what love is.

Big simple and memorable riffs collide and ultimately mesh with huge melodies and harmonies.  Check out the big chorus on Never Gonna Make Me Cry or the insistant chug and killer harmonies on the chorus of Out For Blood.   The former is a song that to this day I can’t believe wasn’t a huge hit.  Leadoff intro Echoes really sets the tone of the album, with Rex Carroll letting you know right off the bat that he can shred with the best of ’em…albeit with more class and atmosphere than many of his contemporaries at the time.   Search and Destroy and Loose Lips are two other songs that you can check out…the former a pretty sturdy rocker and the latter sporting some great harmonies bringing vitality to a lyrically cliche’ chorus.

Bottom line is that the lyrics alone make this disc a guilty pleasure for me.   Like I said…the totally committed rock album I always wished Foreigner would make.   Sad to say but Foreigner’s lyrics ain’t much better.   Otherwise, the songs are so strong and hooky and the sound is just so 80’s big that I find myself revisiting it frequently.  One of those albums that brings me back to some of the happier moments of my adolescence.
