Weekly Abysmal Video – 7/26/10

This week’s WAV comes from an Irish band that I’ve been able to find very little info on, but this song drove me absolutely crazy back in the day. I truly couldn’t decide if I liked it or not for the longest time, then I decided I LOVED it as well as the follow-up single Run.

The album that spawned this tune, “Grow,” is well worth the moolah…and it’s every bit as eccentric and unique as you would expect it to be based on this song. So what are you waiting for? Enjoy Abysmally…

The Sword – Tres Brujas

Dr. Chado (see Abysmal Designations) has just informed me that The Sword has a new track out to promote their forthcoming new CD “Warp Riders.”  This is a great band for those of you into the heavier, fuzzier side of life a-la Kyuss, Trouble, Queens of the Stone Age, classic Black Sabbath, etc.

Watch out for their new CD coming soon.  In the meantime, enjoy Abysmally…

Weekly Abysmal Videos – 7/19/10 (O Canada!)

One of my two favorite new albums is the debut by Canadian rockers Crash Karma.  All four members have histories in excellent Canadian bands going back into the 90’s and my intention for this week’s WAV was to post the video for my favorite song by Crash Karma front man Edwin’s former band I Mother Earth.  Then, I thought it would be cooler to take a moment to celebrate the histories of all four members.

Yeah, I’m a fan just looking for an excuse to write something more about them…and in doing so, I discovered that bassist Amir Epstein’s previous band Zygote had some great jam, too.   And with that, enjoy (Abysmally, of course) 4 of my favorite songs from the pasts of Edwin, Mike Turner, Jeff Burrows and Amir Epstein…then check out their official video for Fight from the Crash Karma CD.

Weekly Abysmal Video – 7/12/10

Dr. Daro (see Abysmal Designations) lists The Pixies as his alltime favorite band, and chief Pixie Frank Black (aka Black Francis) always had a penchant for making dischordant hooks work in a guitar-heavy musical environment.   For some reason, this week’s WAV has remained my personal favorite of Black’s compositions (although The Pixies’ Debaser is a close second) and I’ve found myself listening to it quite a bit lately.

The video’s a kick, too.  And if Smashmouth ever needs to replace their lead singer, Black’s a near deadringer visually.  Seriously, he’s the doppelganger!  Enjoy Abysmally…

Shudder To Think – The Pony Express Record

1995 Sony/BMG Music

I love any album that makes me question my own sanity for liking it.  Hot Head Show’s “The Lemon EP” is one of those albums…wherein a band has such unorthodox song “structures” and “melodies” and play them with such fluidity and cohesion that they make sense through conviction.

The Pony Express Record is one of those discs for me, mixing oddly groovin’ dischordant riffs with lead vocalist (and cancer survivor!!) Craig Wedren waxing post-modern-poetic-philosophic with a melodic sense that is confounding while finding just enough hook as on X-French Tee Shirt.

Whenever I have those momentary doubts about my sanity and/or taste in music, I just remind myself of my father introducing me to Morton Subotnick’s “Silver Apples of the Moon” at the tender young age of 5.   My father taught music for 50 years, continues to write classical compositions and always had an open ear for the esoteric and avant-garde on his listening menu.   So it’s all his fault. lol

In many ways, Shudder To Think reminds me of a slicker-yet-more-wacked-out version of Toadies…especially on songs like Hit Liquor and 9 Fingers On You (which would be a nice companion piece to Toadies’ What We Have We Steal).   This is guitar rock with a most bizarre sense of normalcy and conviction…an album that, 16 years later, I believe was way ahead of its time even in the alternative boom.

Intelligent and diverse with just enough hooks to keep hold of you and draw you into their sometimes psychedelic alter-universe, Shudder To Think’s unique personality is on full display here, from the acoustic-sway-to-dischordant-mantra of No Rm. 9, Kentucky to the stop/start charm of Chakka to the closest thing resembling an orthodox single – the aforementioned X-French Tee Shirt.  Their take on music is so unique, you’d never recognize So Into You as a cover of the classic Atlanta Rhythm Section song.

The Pony Express Record is not a disc that will necessarily smack you upside the head at first.  Rather, it draws you in and lures you back for repeated listens…until it all makes sense to you, and by then it’s too late anyway.

Weekly Abysmal Video – 7/5/10

This week’s WAV is from Washington DC’s Shudder To Think, whose 1994 CD “The Pony Express Record” was listed at #29 on Pitchfork Magazine’s original Top 100 Albums of the 1990’s list.    An excellent and diverse album, this song from it was my first exposure to the band and remains one of my sentimental favorites from my 1990’s radio days.  I loved the alternative explosion because no one really knew what alternative was…so a lot of bands got exposure who wouldn’t have otherwise.  Hell, even the one-hit-wonder songs were cool for the most part.

Anyhoo, check out X-French T-Shirt and (as always) enjoy Abysmally…

Crash Karma – Crash Karma

2010 E1 Music

This review is long overdue (as are several others that are forthcoming), as this disc was released in March – though not here in America.

Dr. Paulo (see Abysmal Designations) and I have this affinity for Canadian rock bands and have for over 10 years now, from The Tea Party to Tricky Woo, I Mother Earth to Danko Jones, Our Lady Peace to…well you get the idea.   Only figures I’d be diggin’ this Canadian…gulp…supergroup featuring members of three of the aforementioned bands.

As I mentioned when I wrote about Them Crooked Vultures, I usually avoid “supergroups” like the plague.  They rarely live up to the hype and, more often than not, are disappointing.   As I also mentioned with Them Crooked Vultures, there are exceptions.   As with TCV, Crash Karma is another one of those exceptions.

Crash Karma is made up of Edwin (vox/ex-I Mother Earth), Mike Turner (guitar/ex-Our Lady Peace), Jeff Burrows (drums/ex-Tea Party/10 Most Truly Abysmal Drummers), Amir Epstein (bass/ex-Zygote).   The more I listen to this disc, the more I love it because it really does combine what I believe are distinctive elements from their individual ex-bands…starting with Edwin’s distinctive pipes.  An immediately identifiable voice.

The disc kicks off with a song called “Like A Wave,” which is perfectly fitting for a disc whose sound just truly washes over you with unbelievable positive and empowering energy:   “Feeling like a wave…so uplifted and free.”  And there’s more where that came from:

“Let the light within you shine.  Close your eyes, but not your mind.” (Energy)

“Next life I hope that I am seen as a freak by the freaks.” (Next Life)

“There’s nothing to be frightened of.  Rise above, we’re finally awake.”  (Awake)

Nearly every song has a line that just hits home with me.  Maybe it’s because of my own personal situation, maybe it’s because these are words we all can identify with.  I don’t know.   What I do know is that without good melody and hooks, even the best words fall on deaf ears.  Hooks, texture, variety and depth are all over this disc.

Jeff Burrows superb power and finesse drives every song, but I’m quite taken with his nuances and groove on “Lost” in particular.  Mike Turner’s guitar crunches when it needs to, and shows a lot of depth and texture from twang to flange…often within the same song, as in “The Fire.”  My apologies to Amir Epstein, as I’m not familiar with his ex-band Zygote.   Doesn’t really matter, though, because he’s a slammin’ bassist here.  As with Burrows and Turner, he combines power and finesse effortlessly and some of his melody lines just really cut through in the best possible way.

If you’re familiar with any of the members’ previous bands, you can take comfort in the fact that there will be some familiarity when you listen to this disc…particularly OLP and early IME.   They never sound like a rehash of any of the bands, however, and the songwriting is just excellent and at times majestic as on the chorus of  “Man I Used To Be.”

Chemistry cannot be bought.  These guys have chemistry.  I believe it’s because they just truly want to make music, and it shows throughout this debut.  Please show the dudes some love and visit their website…and buy this CD!  You’ll be better for it:)  Also check out their vid for “Fight” by clicking here.

Weekly Abysmal Video – 6/28/10

This week’s WAV comes from a Danish band who began life as Disneyland After Dark, but had to shorten their name simply to D.A.D.  when Disney threatened to sue (lest we all get the band confused with the themepark and cost Disney any of their precious revenues they can spend to promote their next brat star).   Truth is, their 1988 US debut “No Fuel Left For the Pilgrims” is chock full of  swingin’ rock hooks most of the hair bands of that time could only dream of…and a peculiar spaghetti western bent to the sound whatwith the low, Duane Eddy-esque melodic guitar lines which figure prominently in the song on display here.

Always had a soft spot in my heart for these guys, for the music is good and their lyrics have a nice salting of good humour throughout all their albums.   And Jesper Binzer is one of the coolest names I’ve ever heard (lead vox/guitar).   Enjoy Abysmally…

Weekly Abysmal Video 6-21-10

This week’s WAV is one of my all-time favorite songs…I believe it was my friend Mark Mohundro who first introduced me to this guy’s music back in the day with the “Love Hysteria” CD.  This one is off the followup CD “Deep” (1990) and is a crowd favorite to this day.   Until REM’s “Losing My Religion,” this song had the longest stay of any song at #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart.  Enjoy Abysmally…

Weekly Abysmal Video(s) – 6/14/10

This week’s WAV comes from a London band whose 1995 self-titled debut CD is simply brilliant…kinda like The Cars melded with The Ramones with female vocals. 16 songs in 40 minutes…The Ramones would indeed be proud.

This is a song that I think should have been huge…I hope you dig it as much as I do, and I hope it brings back some good memories for those of you who already know it. Incidentally, I found two different videos for it…the second one’s kinda racy, so you have been warned.

Enjoy Abysmally…
